BLOG TOUR: A Warm Welcome to The Magnolia Inn (Review + Giveaway)

Dotty Welcomes Readers to The Magnolia Inn

Good morning to all y’all. Thank you for inviting me to your site today to tell you a little about The Magnolia Inn. I’m so excited about this book. The characters became like family to me as I was writing it. Today, I have Dotty with me. She’s one of the four ladies—Sugar, Dotty, Lucy and Flossie—who’ve been fast friends since their youth. I’m going to turn this microphone over to Dotty now, and leave the rest of the post to her.

Hello, folks, I’m Dotty Beauchamp—half Texan, half Louisianan and all sass. I own the Tipsy Gater bar that sets right on the Big Cypress Bayou near Jefferson, Texas. When my good friend, Sugar, told me that she was going to give half of The Magnolia Inn, the bed and breakfast that her family had owned for generations, to her niece, Jolene, I thought she was bat crap crazy. When she said that her husband, Jasper, was giving the other half to his wimpy nephew, Reuben—well, I figured Reuben would sell his half the minute the ink dried on the papers.

I was right! The little weasel sold out his part of the inn to Tucker Malone. We—that would be Lucy and Flossie and me since Sugar was already off in that big ass RV touring the United States—had heard that he was a tortured soul. And dear hearts, we damn sure believed the rumor. He was the best of the best when it came to carpentry work, and from what we heard he only hit the bottle on weekends, but still we didn’t want our precious Jolene in living in that inn with him.

I really didn’t want to hire Jolene when she came to the bar looking for work, but I needed help and she sure enough needed a job. I figured I’d take some flack for it from Sugar, Lucy and Flossie, and I did—believe me I did. But Jolene and I both lived through it.

When we met Tucker for the first time, we were sure that the rumors had been right. His wife had died in an automobile accident a few years back. She’d gone to our church so we all knew her very well, and we’d met Tucker a few times when he showed up at church with her. When she died, he turned to the bottle and lost his important job on the police force over in Dallas. It was rumored that he came to our part of the world to be near her grave site. Poor man, he wore the guilt like a heavy shroud and just couldn’t seem to get past it.

But I’m digressing. When we met him we found out that he was also a Prince Charming. He didn’t have a white horse or a white cowboy hat, or a crown, but he was so sweet and kind, and he had such a sweet nature, that pretty soon, we fell in love with him as much as—well, she didn’t know it then, being as how she had plenty of baggage of her own—but as much as Jolene could it they’d could get past all the obstacles life kept throwing at them.

I see that my time is up. So let me thank you again for inviting me sit a spell and visit with all y’all. And if you’re ever in Jefferson, Texas, come on down to the Tipsy Gater and I’ll give you a free drink if you tell me that you’ve read The Magnolia Inn.

New York Times bestselling author Carolyn Brown brings together two wounded hearts in a Texas romance of second chances and twice-in-a-lifetime true love.
Inheriting the Magnolia Inn, a Victorian home nestled in the East Texas pines, is a fantasy come true for Jolene Broussard. After living with the guilt of failing to rescue her self-destructive mother, Jolene knows her aunt and uncle’s B&B is the perfect jump start for a new life and a comforting place to call home. There’s just one hitch: stubborn and moody carpenter Tucker Malone. He’s got a half interest in the Magnolia Inn, and he’s planting his dusty cowboy boots squarely in the middle of her dream.
Ever since his wife’s death, Tucker’s own guilt and demons have left him as guarded as Jolene. The last thing he expects is for his new partner to stir something inside him he thought was gone forever. And as wary as Jolene is, she may have found a kindred spirit—someone she can help, and someone she can hold on to.
Restoring the Magnolia Inn is the first step toward restoring their hearts. Will they be able to let go of the past and trust each other to do it together?

I'm already a big fan of Carolyn Brown's western and small town romances. The Magnolia Inn is a big reminder of why I'm so drawn to her stories! I never miss a chance to spend time with her down to earth or quirky characters.

Jolene and Tucker both come with emotional baggage, but their determination to restore the Magnolia Inn is the beginning of their healing journey. I liked that these characters both had pasts tinged with betrayal and tragedy because it made them seem all the more real and made me root for them throughout the story. Along the way they had the support of a group of long-time friends who livened up the story and provided comic relief. There was a bit of confrontation at the beginning of the novel between Jolene and her cousin that I wished had been drawn out further into the novel. Her cousin was a piece of work and it would have been interesting to see where he ended up after selling his share in the Inn.

It was so easy to become attached to the characters and the paths they take. As the story drew to a close I felt like I was preparing to say goodbye to my own friends although I loved how the ending brought the story full circle and left on a positive note.

He threw Arden a tight smile, hoping she'd get the hint and play along. "Yes, because I'm dating Arden here. We've been waiting to finally make it official in town." He gave Arden's shoulder an extra squeeze when her mouth dropped open. "Didn't want to tell people too soon. You know, in case it didn't work out. But I think we can finally come clean, don't you agree, honey?"
Arden slowly blinked her ocean-blue eyes up at him as if coming out of a yearlong coma. "Uh, right…babycakes."
Babycakes? Seriously? That's the first nickname she could think of?
Wade's smile was frozen in place as he turned back to Judy. "See?"
Judy pushed her dark-framed glasses up her nose, then laid a hand on her heart. "Oh my. This is such wonderful news! Better than I'd hoped. I knew something was going on between you two."
"You did?" they both asked. He and Arden regarded each other. She seemed as confused as he felt.
Judy nodded. "Yep. I'm an expert on true love. Been married sixty years next month," she said proudly.
"That must be why you're so good at matchmaking," he lied. "Sorry to take your work out from under you like this."
She blushed and waved his comment away. "You're too sweet. But the girls and I just wanted to see you happy for a change now that Kinsley was settled."
Happy for a change? Was he really that miserable looking?
Arden cleared her throat, nudging him in the side with her knuckle. Ow. The woman had steel for bones.
"Babycakes," Arden said between her teeth, slyly poking him again, "I really need to buy my coffee and get going. I have an appointment this afternoon to prepare for."
"Oh right. I forgot. Well, you know your money's no good when you're with me, honey," he said, winking at Judy. "Order what you like. I've got it."
Arden smiled up at him sweetly before ordering. "Two regular macchiatos—no, make that grande macchiatos, a bag of regular ground coffee, and four gingerbread muffins. Oh, and you might as well throw in a couple of those ham paninis. It's almost lunch time after all."
Wade narrowed his eyes. "Two coffees, a bag of coffee, four muffins, and a couple of paninis, honey?"
"Yes, babycakes," she said with an innocent smile. "I've been so very hungry lately. Gee, I hope I'm not eating for two." When she gingerly pressed a hand on her belly, he choked.
"Uh, she's kidding," he told Judy, handing her the money. "That's what I love about her." He gave Arden a sidelong glare. "She's so much fun to be around."
Fun as a rabid rottweiler.
Judy winked as she gave him back his change. "Trying to one-up Kinsley with a baby, huh?"
He shook his head. "No. There's no baby."
"Yet," Arden chimed in.
Wade gritted his teeth. At that very moment he wasn't sure who he was more annoyed with: his nosy personal matchmaker or his sassy, fake, almost-pregnant girlfriend.
One of Judy's staff came over to the counter and handed Arden her bag of food and take-out tray of coffees. "Thanks so much," Arden said. She gave Wade a wide grin. "And thank you, baby lips."
It's babycakes. Couldn't she even keep the nickname straight? She was a terrible fake girlfriend.
Judy chuckled. "You two are so cute together."
Wade harrumphed as he watched Arden sashay to a side table for napkins. "See you later, Judy." He pointed a finger at her before turning away. "Remember, no more matchmaking. Arden is very jealous."
"Oh, of course." The older woman folded her hands and seemed insulted. "I wouldn't think of it now."

Halleluiah. He was almost sure he heard angels singing, and hoped what Judy said was true. No more matchmaking. No more women. No more gifts. And if it were true, he needed to ensure pronto that his newfound-fake girlfriend didn't blow his cover. He glanced around, and when he saw Arden had left, rushed out the door to catch up with her.

REVIEW: The Conspiracy by Kat Martin

Harper Winston’s brother has disappeared. Pursuing his dream of sailing the Caribbean, Michael hasn’t responded to texts or emails in days. When even the Coast Guard can’t find him, Harper is forced to take desperate measures. Which means going to Chase Garrett, once her brother’s best friend, now the only man she can trust…or so she hopes.

As the successful owner of Maximum Security, Chase has learned to trust his gut. He knows Harper’s father is mixed up in a deadly business, and suspects there’s more to Michael’s disappearance than meets the eye. Getting involved again with the Winstons goes against everything he stands for, yet old loyalties die hard. As the case draws him closer to Harper and deeper into the Winstons’ snarled crime family, he is forced to put everything on the line to keep Harper safe…and both of them alive.

Kat Martin's Maximum Security series is off to a wonderful, action-packed beginning! When I picked up this story I had no idea I would be following a heroine as she braves Colombian jungles in the hopes she could rescue her big brother. The Conspiracy is a fast paced romantic suspense that fully engages you and keeps you on your toes.

When she can't get in touch with her brother while he's on vacation in the Caribbean, Harper Winston turns to the one man she knows will help her. With a family history of law enforcement and military service Chase Garrett doesn't want anything to do with the Winstons because of their father's criminal activities. However, for the sake of his former friendship with Michael he agrees to help Harper.

The story doesn't begin and end with the extraction of Harper's brother from Colombia. Once back home Harper contends with the DEA going after her father and an invisible player gunning for her life. Her relationship with Chase is hot and cold which draws their romance out and really makes you wonder where they'll end up. Time after time, Harper proves that she can handle whatever is thrown her way. She also proves to be my favorite kind of heroine: strong, independent, and caring.

I love the layers that create this story because you don't know how things connect until they do. With a few twists and turns to keep readers invested in the story The Conspiracy exceeds expectations. I highly recommend for fans of Christina Dodd's Cape Charade series, and Marissa Garner.

BLOG TOUR: A Merciful Fate (Excerpt, Review + Giveaway)

In the next book in the Wall Street Journal bestselling Mercy Kilpatrick series, there are no such things as little secrets…

Raised by preppers, survivalist and FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick has a deep-rooted need for a safe place. Her getaway in the Cascade Foothills is her secret. But when skeletal remains are unearthed—those of a murdered man linked to a notorious heist—Mercy realizes she isn’t the only one with something to hide.

Thirty years ago, an armored-car robbery turned deadly. The mastermind was captured. Four conspirators vanished with a fortune. One of them, it appears, never made it out of the woods alive. For Mercy and her fiancĂ©, Police Chief Truman Daly, their investigation opens old wounds in Eagle’s Nest that cut deeper than they imagined. Especially when a reckless tabloid reporter draws fresh blood. It’s clear to Mercy that somebody in this close-knit community is not who they seem to be.

Some are still shattered by the heist. Some still have reason to be afraid. But which one will kill again and again to hide three decades of secrets? To land this case, it’s up to Mercy to unmask a familiar stranger before someone else dies.

Mercy Kilpatrick is back in action! The fifth novel of the series, A Merciful Fate, takes a new turn as a 30-year-old unsolved bank robbery is once again under investigation. Kendra Elliot shakes up the small town of Eagles Nest with surprises ranging from good to shocking.

Two cases of vandalism and a skeleton discovered in an abandoned cabin set up the mysteries of this story. Throughout the story I had to reset what I assumed with each new fact presented. Not knowing whether the cases were related, and if they were, how, was what kept me reading long into the night. It was like the answers were within my grasp, but then something either diverted my attention or caused me to second-guess myself. I loved it!

After five novels in this series, Mercy has finally made a place for herself in the place she grew up. Her relationship with her father is still rocky, but there's still time for mending. A wedding is in the horizon and Mercy and Truman are stronger than ever. I'm enjoying learning about the new addition to the cast, Ollie. His character has been like a breath of fresh air and I loved that he's played an essential role in both A Merciful Silence and A Merciful Fate after coming seemingly out of nowhere.

Next in the series is A Merciful Promise. I can't wait to see what's next for the residents of Eagle's Nest. The series up to this point has been intriguing and the perfect balance of suspense and romance.

Twenty-One Years, Three Months, Six Days Ago . .

“Where is it! Goddamn you, where’s it at!”

Duran spit blood out of his mouth and spoke over the ringing in his ears. “I’ll never tell you—”

Chalen the Conqueror swung his open palm again, nailing Duran’s lacerated face like a bat hitting a fastball. But it didn’t hurt as much as the other shit they’d been doing to him in this castle’s great room. They’d already pulled out his fingernails, broken all of his toes, and whipped his back until strips of his own flesh flapped against his ribs. At the moment, he didn’t have the strength to keep himself on his feet, but no worries there—two guards, with grips locked under his pits, were holding him up off the floor.
As his head flopped back into its lolling hang, he shook it to get the sweat and blood out of his eyes. In the hissing, kicking light of the hearth, the male in front of him was stocky of build and ugly of feature, an oak stump with a bulldog’s muzzle and a hungry bear’s bad fucking attitude.
“You are going to tell me the location.” Chalen took Duran by the throat with one of his meat hands. “And you’re going to do it now.”
“Sorry, not . . . a big talker—”

The conqueror grabbed onto the lower half of Duran’s face, squeezing so hard his jaw split and the inside of his mouth was forced between the hard-and-sharp of his molars. More blood welled, spilled, fell on his bare chest.

“Why are you protecting the male who put you here?” Chalen’s opaque eyes searched Duran’s expression as if he were trying to extrapolate a map of Maryland in the features. “All you need to do is tell me where that facility is.”

Duran waited for that grip to release. When it did, he spit more blood out. “I’m not . . . protecting him.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“Making sure you don’t cheat me of what’s mine.” Duran smiled, aware he must look deranged. “You kill him . . . I don’t get to.”

Chalen crossed his strong-man arms over his barrel chest. He was dressed in weapons, whatever clothes he had on underneath the holsters of guns and knives largely hidden by metal. No daggers, though. He’d never been Black Dagger Brotherhood material and not just because he was a mutt according to his lineage: Even among black market thieves, there was a code of conduct.

Not for Chalen. He had no code. Not in the Old Country, and not during his last century here in the New World.

There was only one male who was worse.

“I will break you,” Chalen said in a low voice. “And I will enjoy it.”

Duran laughed in a wheeze. “You have no idea what I’ve already been through—”

Chalen swung that palm wide again, the crack so heavy Duran lost his vision, everything going checkerboard. And then there was a drop in blood pressure, his brain emptying of oxygen, floaty disassociation riding in, a foggy savior buffering the suffering.

The sound of chains moving and gears shifting brought him back to reality. A section of the sweaty stone wall rose by inches, the great weight ascending like a gate, revealing a corridor . . .

Revealing a male who was naked but for a black hood that covered his head.

“I will make you pray for death,” Chalen said. “And when you give me what I need, you will think back to this moment. When you could have saved yourself from so much.”

Duran exhaled in a gurgle. His body was on fire, the pain burning through his veins, turning him into a semi-living, kind-of-breathing, sort-of-conscious incubator for agony.

But fuck Chalen.

“Do what you will,” he mumbled. “I’m not going to give you a goddamn thing.”

“I will make you wish you were never born.”

As the hooded male came forward, Duran was dragged over and slammed face-first down onto a table, his torso bent parallel to the floor. Turning his face to the side, he smelled the spoiled meat and rancid fat embedded in the fibers of the planks.

“Already there, asshole."

Back in Sullivan's Crossing - The Best of Us (Review)

In Sullivan’s Crossing, #1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr has created a place where good people, powerful emotions, great humor and a healthy dose of common sense are the key ingredients to a happy life. Sullivan’s Crossing brings out the best in people. It’s a place you’ll want to visit again and again.

Dr. Leigh Culver loves practicing medicine in Timberlake, Colorado. It is a much-needed change of pace from her stressful life in Chicago. The only drawback is she misses her aunt Helen, the woman who raised her. But it’s time that Leigh has her independence, and she hopes the beauty of the Colorado wilderness will entice her aunt to visit often.

Helen Culver is an independent woman who lovingly raised her sister’s orphaned child. Now, with Leigh grown, it’s time for her to live life for herself. The retired teacher has become a successful mystery writer who loves to travel and intends to never experience winter again.

When Helen visits Leigh, she is surprised to find her niece still needs her, especially when it comes to sorting out her love life. But the biggest surprise comes when Leigh takes Helen out to Sullivan’s Crossing and Helen finds herself falling for the place and one special person. Helen and Leigh will each have to decide if they can open themselves up to love neither expected to find and seize the opportunity to live their best lives.

I am so happy to be back in Sullivan's Crossing! Robyn Carr's series grabbed me in Any Day Now and I can't stop myself from visiting the idyllic town. The Best of Us introduces the town's new resident, Leigh Culver, who has fallen in love with the people and her fulfilling role practicing medicine in a small community.

Leigh convinces her Aunt Helen, who raised her after the death of her young mother, to visit and escape the Chicago winter. Aunt Helen's arrival sparks the beginning of a new chapter in their lives and the changes they face could make or break their relationship. Rob Shandon, introduced in The Family Gathering, never thought he'd ever consider marriage after the death of his wife nine years ago. But his whirlwind relationship with Leigh takes a complicated turn and he has to rethink the next phase of his life.

I love how this story has drama from every angle of the story. From Helen and Sully to Finn and Maia, there is something extra to pull you into the lives of these ordinary people with big hearts. I thought it was interesting that two characters experienced life-changing events, but only one of them was life-threatening and actually made me wish that it was the focus of the novel, or maybe in a novel on its own. It didn't seem balanced to me, but in terms of upping the stakes and keeping reader interest that side drama did its job.

The Best of Us is a feel-good story that focuses on more than just romantic relationships. Helen and Leigh have more of a mother-daughter relationship that goes through it's ups and downs and is definitely far from perfect. I loved seeing them overcome misunderstandings and arguments and work towards building their separate lives while remaining close to each other. Don't miss this exciting entry into the Sullivan's Crossing series! It's perfect for fans of Mariah Stewart and RaeAnne Thayne!

Carolyn Brown is keeping fans happy with another supply of sexy cowboys! Cowboy Bold set the stage for the humor and romance that follow the series and now it's time to see Justin Maguire meet his match in Cowboy Brave. Readers are introduced the heroine, Emily Baker, who opens up a whole world of new characters for us to fall in love with.

Emily is a laid-back city girl who knows her way around a ranch. She books a week at Longhorn Canyon with five seniors, then spends it keeping an eye on their antics and connecting with bachelor cowboy Justin. This story was full of high energy that made me excited to keep picking it up. I especially liked that there was a little friction between Justin's mom and Emily. It added an unexpected layer of drama. I like that this series is heartwarming and ultimately filled with HEAs, but a little bit of tension between characters balances out the sweetness and keeps it realistic.

I've been totally taken in by the growing family on Longhorn Canyon. Each novel is a standalone, but doesn't quite let go of the previous characters. Cade, Retta, Levi, Claire, and so many others continue to liven up the pages and keep the story interesting. I'm so excited about the series continuing and drawing in new characters, starting with Cowboy Rebel!
