Lord of Secrets is the story of a young woman, Rosalie Whitwell, who’s spent most of her life sailing the globe with her father. When he suffers a fatal heart attack in the middle of the North Atlantic, she turns in her panic to a fellow passenger–the moody, mysterious Lord Deal.

Having witnessed his father’s suicide years before, David Linney, Marquess of Deal, has withdrawn from society, living the life of a recluse. Even so, he’s drawn to his pretty shipmate, like him the victim of family tragedy.

The end of the voyage spurs David to propose. But on their wedding night, Rosalie meets with an unwelcome surprise: her handsome husband is strangely unwilling to consummate the marriage. Is her own lack of allure to blame, or is there some other reason for David’s reluctance? To find the answer, Rosalie must unlock the secret of David’s past.
Alyssa Everett's Lord of Secrets is a dashing historical romance that surrounds readers with the complex lives of two strong characters. David Linney, Marquess of Deal, stands apart from society. He believes that his neighbors and friends shamed him because of his father's suicide. It's also the secrets he keeps that keep him fearful of letting anyone come too close. Rosalie Whitwell is young, optimistic, and struck with the need to help others. She's a lovely character that pushes so much hope into the lines of the story.

Rosalie loses her father coming back from their latest travels. Amid the tragedy Rosalie forms a fragile connection to David, the hero who stepped in when Rosalie was shocked by the death of her father and left with few options. Surprisingly, he proposes marriage out of concern for Rosalie's welfare, hoping to remain aloof and in tight reign of his secrets.

Everett's idea of romance is spectacular. Though the conflicts in Rosalie and David's relationship were internal, the fight for a happily ever after was passionate. I loved that Rosalie never tried to change David, but just tried to do everything she could to make their marriage work. She struggled to be her caring self and fit into David's world, never imagining that she would indeed have such a grand affect on him.

Lord of Secrets is not completely lovey-dovey, but features very shocking twists that spell ruin for Rosalie and David. The suspense of discovering David's dark secrets make the romance that much sweeter, because through all the drama and emotional distress, readers will come to understand and truly care for these characters. Everett's latest read will hold your heart captive and consume your thoughts!
