Celebrate the release of Pursuing the Bear! (Review + Giveaway)

The Shifter Wars heat up when a woman investigates the mysteries surrounding a fierce breed of man and exposes more than just secrets.

Bear shifters exist. Professor Bria Lane has known this since she was a child. Now she's returned to the forests of Deep Creek to prove it to the world. She has no idea how close she is to that proof in ruggedly sexy park ranger Derek Poole. Intimately close. But uncovering Derek's wild side comes with a shattering price.

Like a magnet meeting metal, Derek is drawn to Bria. His destiny. His mate. So beautiful and so vulnerable. So dangerous, too: an encroachment of lions, vengeful and vicious, is closing in and they're ready for war. Now is not the time to be distracted like a lovesick cub.

If Bria reveals the truth of the Deep Creek shifters to the world, she'll bring out the worst of both sides. But Derek can't hide his secrets from the love of his life forever. He knows they're playing with fire—and that when passion runs this hot, this reckless, someone's bound to get burned.

Kerry Adrienne surely delivers on the Carina Press Romance Promise! Pursuing the Bear, book two in the Shifter Wars series focuses on the sizzling connection between ursinologist Bria Lane and bear shifter Derek Poole.

Bria is in Deep Creek National Park to find bears. Not just ordinary bears, but humans that shift into bears. Her first day in the park she meets Derek, park ranger and bear shifter. When he learns what Bria is searching for he decides to help her, if only to keep her from exposing the truth of shifters to the world. Avoiding exposure isn't his only concern though. The shifter lions in the area are gunning for the sacred Cave of Whispers and war is imminent. The bears have to be on their guard to protect their pack and the cave. If you haven't already read the first book in the series, don't worry. Pursuing the Bear fills you in on the main story arc as it becomes relevant.

The dialogue is a little repetitive and sometimes comes across very plainly, but it doesn't detract from the connection between Bria and Derek. Their relationship becomes hot and heavy but manages to remain a sweet romance. Pursuing the Bear's plot is driven by the romance. I would have like to read more detail about Bria's relationship with her parents or her relationship with her ex, just to understand her pain a little more. Bria thinks about them throughout the novel, but we don't really get clear examples of how they interacted with each other. Nevertheless, Bria and Derek are the next hot couple.

Kerry Adrienne didn't just write this story to give readers a fun romance to escape into. She boosts it with a little action and even drops a few clues about the next story. You will not want to miss jumping back into the Shifter Wars series with Taming the Lion!

Lose Yourself in Merrie Destefano's Dark and Imaginative Lost Girls (Review)

Yesterday, Rachel went to sleep listening to Taylor Swift, curled up in her grammy’s quilt, worrying about geometry. Today, she woke up in a ditch, bloodied, bruised, and missing a year of her life.

She doesn’t recognize the person she’s become: she’s popular. She wears nothing but black.

Black to cover the blood.

And she can fight.

Tell no one.

She’s not the only girl to go missing within the last year…but she’s the only girl to come back. She desperately wants to unravel what happened to her, to try and recover the rest of the Lost Girls.

But the more she discovers, the more her memories return. And as much as her new life scares her, it calls to her. Seductively. The good girl gone bad, sex, drugs, and raves, and something darker…something she still craves—the rush of the fight, the thrill of the win—something she can’t resist, that might still get her killed…

The only rule is: There are no rules.

I knew that Lost Girls was going to be an interesting read, but I didn't expect it to be so totally engrossing! Merrie Destefano writes to capture attention and holds it by engaging readers thoroughly as Rachel's dark tale unfolds.

Rachel comes to consciousness in a ditch without memory of how she got there or the last year of her life. As she resumes her normal routine of school and ballet, she realizes that the truth behind her disappearance lies with the group of friends she doesn't remember acquiring. Their late night antics make her question what type of person she is and how they fell into this dangerous lifestyle.

Merrie Destefano tells a dark and imaginative story that takes readers beyond Rachel's dig for answers. This fast paced read takes readers into the heart of the characters and their emotional struggles. Reading Lost Girls is like putting together a puzzle. You try to piece the story together until it makes sense and when it all comes together in the end, you sit back with a sigh of satisfaction. The whole picture will put the story into a different light and readers will see how relatable Rachel's story is. When you pick up this story be prepared to lose yourself in it!

The Golden Gate is Almost an Exciting Thriller (Review)

An exciting future thriller from nationally best-selling author of the Orphan's Legacy science fiction saga. A face-off with killers in order to guard a secret that could change humanity forever.

When the world’s richest man is the victim of a car bomb and literally blown off the Golden Gate Bridge the attack is attributed to terrorists and the world moves on. But some still wonder. Was Manuel Colibri targeted because, as Silicon Valley rumor has it, he was about to make the dream that people alive today can live to be one thousand come true?

Two people are pursuing the truth. Tech journalist Kate Boyle and recovering Iraq war veteran Ben Shepard race through the Bay Area chasing the only clues the reclusive Colibri left behind. They discover not only each other but a cosmic secret that can change human history—and may cost them their lives.
The Golden Gate
Robert Buettner
Pub Date: 1/3/17
Publisher: Baen Books
Genre: Science Fiction
Amazon | B&N

The Golden Gate almost lives up to the promise of an exciting thriller set in the near future. Robert Buettner delivers on an interesting science fiction mystery, but the execution does not follow through.

The story is immediately engaging. Manuel Colibri is blown off the Golden Gate bridge in what seems to be an isolated terrorist attack. David Powell believes there's more to the story so he hires his former employee Jack Boyle, and his daughter Kate, to investigate further. Working with Department of Homeland Security official Ben Shepard, they follow a scavenger hunt of clues to piece together the life of Colibri and discover why he may have been targeted.

I was pulled into the story by why Colibri was attacked, but as the story continues the 'why' is pushed to the back burner. The answers to the questions posed in the beginning of the novel are not answered until the end. The very end. There's no give and take. There's no intricate web of mystery in The Golden Gate. Ben and Kate work closely to fit the pieces together, but it all just really falls into their laps as the story progresses. I don't mind that the story is easy to follow, but when the end of the novel is conveniently wrapped up because the answers are suddenly apparent I find it a little too easy. There is indeed an interesting conclusion, but the big reveal is treated as more of a side note.

Overall, I expected more from The Golden Gate and I wasn't completely satisfied. The science fiction element was definitely there, but the mystery of the plot just didn't raise it to the right level.

Alison Davies used to just be a trophy wife. Now she’s just flat broke. In fact, Alison’s determination to go it alone just strengthens his resolve—and his desire to find out what makes her tick. Excerpt from Trophy Wife
“But you seem so strong and…and in control.”
Rob relaxed, feeling a lot better at her words. “Uh, thanks, but I haven’t always felt this way.”
“What did you do to feel in control again?” She seemed to really want to know, really want him to help her.
There was nothing he could tell her but the truth. “You just make a decision to stay the person you’ve always been, the person you really are.”
She dropped her eyes and let out a long breath. “I’m not sure I even know how to do that.” She sounded defeated.
He couldn’t stand for her to feel that way—not when she was obviously so brave and so resilient. He reached out to tilt her face up so she was meeting his eyes again. “Yes, you do. Look at what you’ve already done—in just one week. I don’t think you have any idea how much you can do.”
Her face melted. It was the only way to describe it. She looked grateful and warm and tender, and Rob couldn't resist it.
He leaned forward, tilting his head down until he could meet her lips with his.
He wasn’t sure how she would respond, so he was prepared to pull back immediately. But she gave a little hitch of breath and one of her hands moved up to his shoulder. His body starting to throb with excitement, he deepened the kiss, leaning into it, letting his tongue tease the line of her lips.
She was soft and warm and responsive, and her mouth parted for his as she adjusted to get closer to him. Her other hand moved to tangle in his hair.
Both of them were dirty and sweaty, but it just didn’t matter. Rob was completely into the kiss, lost in the feeling and sensations and the hot sweetness she was so eagerly offering him.
It went on long enough for his body to respond, and the pulsing of his groin was a painful sort of pleasure. She was making little whimpering noises and fisting her hand in his hair, and he suddenly realized he’d better pull back or he was going to take her right there on the dirt of her backyard.
With effort, he released her and leaned back, willing his arousal to back down a little. Allison was coming off of a difficult divorce. She wasn’t likely to want to jump into bed with a guy she’d known for just a week.
Allison’s cheeks were deeply flushed, and she was panting as she stared at him.
They just looked at each other for a long time, during which Rob continued to fight a battle with his body not to pull her back into his arms.
“I…” Allison began at last. “I wasn’t expecting that.”
“I know.” His voice sounded too thick, so he cleared his throat. “I…” He wasn’t going to apologize. He wasn’t the least bit sorry. He had no idea what else to say, though.
Allison evidently did know. She rubbed her face and took a few deep breaths. “It was…it was a good kiss, but I’m not…I’m not looking for a relationship.”
The excitement in his chest dropped in an instant with a painful thud.

Colleen Hoover Empowers and Uplifts With Latest Novel It Ends With Us (Review)

Lily hasn't always had it easy, but that's never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She's come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up - she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily's life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, and maybe even a little arrogant. He's also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily, but Ryle's complete aversion to relationships is disturbing.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan - her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

With this bold and deeply personal novel, Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. It Ends With Us is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.

This book contains graphic scenes and very sensitive subject matter.
It Ends With Us
Colleen Hoover
Pub Date: 8/2/2016
Publisher: Atria Books
Genre: Women's Fiction

I admit that It Ends With Us is my first Colleen Hoover novel, but I think I picked the right story to introduce myself to her writing. It's deep and moving and will break readers' hearts to pieces.

Lily is a 23 year old girl not quite mourning the death of her father. She's making a life for herself in Boston, where everything is better, and creates her dream floral shop. Ryle Kincaid is the icing on the cake: a neurosurgeon and a man willing to change his view on relationships for her. Life is perfect until it takes a turn to a place Lily never thought she'd be in.

Actually, life is a little too perfect for Lily in the beginning of the novel. Her business takes off without a hitch and it's like sunshine and rainbows for her. That's more than half the novel before Lily's relationship with Ryle takes a nosedive. It Ends With Us shows the contrast between Lily's life when things are well and when she finds herself in a dark place, but I don't think it was evenly balanced in the story.

The moving part of the story is when Lily takes a stand for herself and her future. There's a moment towards the end where I just fall to pieces because it's so raw, heartbreaking, and hopeful all at once. It Ends With Us is empowering and instills courage in women who have found themselves in similar situations as Lily.

My head has definitely been turned towards Colleen Hoover and I'm ready to binge on her other novels!

The crowd screamed and clapped. A few rows behind Tiana, someone started a chant for the Beast. Clapping, she chanted with the crowd. The announcer waved a hand in the air and gripped the mic with his other one. “Unanimously voted to win all four rounds and still undefeated, I give you,” he walked to the corner and raised Nathan’s arm in the air, “the Beaaaaaassst!”

Tiana jumped and clapped as he stepped away and waved his arms in victory to the crowd. This isn’t so bad.

“Tiana wants to have a dozen babies with you, Beast!” Mel screamed at the top of her lungs.

Before Tiana could renounce her Martin Luther King philosophy of nonviolence and sock her former friend in her arm, Nathan turned to face them.

A flicker of heat, and a big dose of danger burned in his gaze. A jolt of energy zapped and electrified her. Every particle and cell in her body awakened, liquefied, and then sizzled. His lips tipped at the corners into a lazy smile.

“I’ll have your babies, too!” someone yelled from the crowd. His gaze stayed fixed on her face. His dark eyes broadcasted, “I’ve seen you naked and I like it,” to anyone who cared to see. Clenching her legs together, she quivered. Nathan gave her a cocky-ass smile as if he knew he was the cause of the mini-explosions firing within her.

A ring girl stepped into the octagon, sashayed up to Nathan, and leaned in for a kiss. Tiana jerked away from their intimate moment and held her breath for a second before looking back. Much like his fight, he ducked the woman’s advances, hopped on the stool in his boxing corner, and jumped over the ropes surrounding the ring. Landing with the ease of a panther, he stalked toward Tiana.

Mel nudged her and whispered, “Brace yourself.” Taking her friend’s wise advice, she breathed deep. Her eyes filled with him. A tall, dark, sexy, and sweaty vision. This man—this sexy beast—wanted her. Only her.

“Peaches,” he growled as he snatched off his gloves and tossed them carelessly on the floor. Closing the distance between them, he wrapped one hand around her waist and cupped her face with the other. His hard, unrelenting eyes continued to broadcast a message. No going back. His tongue swiped her mouth, as if testing the waters, followed by firm, warm lips. He commanded surrender, obedience, and absolutely no negotiations. She clung to him knowing his kiss had changed everything.

Her heart slammed and knocked against her chest, and her knees buckled. She was … Damn it, am I swooning? Like a well-practiced, swashbuckling pirate, his arms snaked around her waist as he drew her body into his. Wetness pooled and flooded her lacy Vicky Secrets. Nathan had just KO’ed her va-jay-jay.

Winged monsters have been seen in the skies, and a pestilence follows in their wake, threatening the very survival of mankind. Waiting On Wednesday: On Second Thought

"Waiting on" Wednesday, or WOW, is a meme created by Jill @ Breaking the Spine. Join in the discussion to see what upcoming releases we're currently buzzing about.

My first choice in reading is usually science fiction or mystery, so I don't find many chances to read chick-lit or contemporary romance. When I do I try to go for the emotional reads which, if the praise is to be believed, is one of Kristan Higgins' trademarks. #EXCITED

I just received an ARC for this week's pick so stay tuned for a review! :-)

Following in the footsteps of her critically acclaimed novel If You Only Knew , multi-bestselling author Kristan Higgins returns with a pitch-perfect look at the affection—and the acrimony—that binds sisters together.

Ainsley O'Leary is so ready to get married—she's even found the engagement ring her boyfriend has stashed away. What she doesn't anticipate is for Eric to blindside her with a tactless breakup he chronicles in a blog…which (of course) goes viral. Devastated and humiliated, Ainsley turns to her half sister, Kate, who's already struggling after the sudden loss of her new husband.

Kate has always been so poised, so self-assured, but Nathan's death shatters everything she thought she knew—including her husband—and sometimes the people who step up aren't the ones you expect. With seven years and a murky blended-family dynamic between them, Ainsley and Kate have never been overly close, but their shared sorrow dovetails their faltering worlds into one.

Despite the lifetime of history between them, the sisters must learn to put their differences aside and open their hearts to the inevitable imperfection of family—and the possibility of one day finding love again.
ON SECOND THOUGHT by Kristan Higgins releases January 31, 2017 from HQN Books!

Jus Accardo Is Still Keeping it Real in Infinity (Review)

There are three things Kori knows for sure about her life:

One: Her army general dad is insanely overprotective.

Two: The guy he sent to watch her, Cade, is way too good-looking.

Three: Everything she knew was a lie.

Now there are three things Kori never knew about her life:

One: There’s a device that allows her to jump dimensions.

Two: Cade’s got a lethal secret.

Three: Someone wants her dead.
The Infinity Division #1
Jus Accardo
Pub Date: 11/1/16
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Genre: YA, Science Fiction
Amazon | B&N

Jus Accardo first caught my eye when she released Touch. It rocked my teenage heart! Fast forward a few years and she's caught it again with Infinity, the first in her Infinity Division Series.

As much as I loved the Denazen series, I have very mixed feelings about Infinity. The premise is right up my alley: parallel worlds and constant action. Unfortunately, the execution and complicated love interested left me feeling a little less than enthusiastic. It turned out to be so far from what I expected from this author. The story was rushed, the narration choppy, and only saved by the anticipation of a fun multiverse hopping adventure (which didn't feature as heavily as expected).

The story was repetitive and lacked the world building details that would make this a strong foundation for the series. It's primarily built around Kori, a girl still reeling from the death of her mother and trying to use art as an outlet for her pain. Learning that her mother could potentially be alive in an unknown number of different universes gives her a hope that she can't bring herself to believe. There's a danger that follows that hope and he's determined to wipe her out. The characterization is on point. The main characters are emotional and determined in their beliefs, even when they're wrong. Jus Accardo has always been skilled at bringing teen angst to life in her stories. Readers get the sense of evil super villain versus the unexpected new hero.

Infinity didn't blow me away like I thought it would. However, I know readers who love quick, action filled reads will dive in and love it.
