A Story That Gives You All the Feels: Geekerella (Review)

Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. But when she disappears at midnight, will he ever be able to find her again?

Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.

Geekerella spoke to my soul even before I cracked the spine! Ashley Poston has taken fandom and neatly submersed it into a Cinderella retelling to end all retellings. Think, A Cinderella Story mixed with new age Star Trek, Doctor Who, Star Gate, get the picture.

Danielle Wittimer has a healthy obsession with the sci-fi hit television show, Starfield. It was her father's favorite show and one they watched together before his untimely passing. In the ensuing years, Elle's stepmother has virtually removed all the traces of her father from the home and her step-family is making her basic existence miserable. Darien Freeman, teen heartthrob and newly cast as one of the most influential Starfield characters, is balancing his newfound celebrity and all the haters who scoff at his ability to take on the role. It doesn't matter that he once spent hours watching Starfield reruns and venturing to cons, the true fans think he's in it for the money. In separate plot lines that lead to one nerdy main event, the Excelsicon, readers are opened to both Elle and Darien's path to acceptance of themselves and their beloved geek culture.

Ashley Poston expertly weaves in references to familiar shows that any newbie or die-hard fan can appreciate. It was most pleasingly like watching an episode of The Big Bang Theory! There are genuine laugh out loud moments that make you realize you are not alone in your geek-tastic life. She still manages to write a heartfelt story that, yes, gives you all the feels. I didn't even see the tears coming, but they trickled out even after I raged on Elle's behalf. This evil step-mother has to be the best characterization I've seen in YA. I couldn't help but place myself in Elle's shoes and wish I could've done something to fight back.

With Geekerella Ashley Poston definitely touches the heart of fandom! Though the story invokes thoughtful reactions, overall it's a lighthearted read that will especially win with anyone already embracing their geekiness.
