Are You America's Next Reality Star? (Review)

Twenty-four-year-old Jen Reid had her life in good shape: an okay job, a tiny-cute Seattle apartment, and a great boyfriend almost ready to get serious. In a flash it all came apart. Single, unemployed, and holding an eviction notice, who has time to remember trying out for a reality show? Then the call comes, and Jen sees her chance to start over—by spending her summer on national TV.

Luckily The Fishbowl is all about puzzles and games, the kind of thing Jen would love even if she wasn’t desperate. The cast checks all the boxes: cheerful, quirky Birdie speaks in hashtags; vicious Ariana knows just how to pout for the cameras; and corn-fed “J-dawg” plays the cartoon villain of the house. Then there’s Justin, the green-eyed law student who always seems a breath away from kissing her. Is their attraction real, or a trick to get him closer to the $250,000 grand prize? Romance or showmance, suddenly Jen has a lot more to lose than a summer...

Laura Heffernan brings readers laughs and romance in this shining debut. America's Next Reality Star takes you inside the fishbowl as a group of randomly selected strangers competes for $250,000.

Jen Reid is enduring the life of a marketing professional until everything comes crashing down around her. She has to find another place to live, she finds out her serious boyfriend is married, and finally, she loses her job. Just when she needed it, the position on a puzzle-based reality show that she auditioned for comes through. Now Jen has to compete against 11 other contestants in battles of brain and brawn to earn viewer votes and avoid elimination.

America's Next Reality Star has a brilliant concept excellently executed. The characters are realistic and the competitions fun and exciting. Between the drama and games, I'm surprised we're able to get a well-rounded romance out of this story. Justin, a fellow contestant, and Jen strike up a friendship during the auditions that grows well beyond the limits of the show. It's hard to have a romance with millions of people watching your every move, but somehow it's a piece of cake to steal memorable moments.

I felt like I was getting a backstage view of an MTV reality show. We even get inside the head of secondary characters as they talk about who they want to vote off the show, or how they feel about the games they have to participate in. There's no shortage of drama as Jen deals with clashing personalities and fierce competitors.

This series starter is a definite for a fun and entertaining read. I haven't read anything like it thus far and I'm excited to catch the following novel, Sweet Reality!
