A Tender Historical Romance: The Luck of the Bride (Review)

Can a woman who’s down on her luck find love with a dashing Duke-to-be? Find out in The Luck of the Bride, the next Regency romance in the Cavensham Heiresses series from Janna MacGregor.

She’s leaving nothing up to chance. Not even love…

March Lawson is an orphan who, for the past eight years, has struggled to raise her siblings on a meager allowance. Most women March’s age would be picking out ball gowns for the upcoming season. But March’s focus is not on finding a husband. First, she must devote her energies to just one man: the coldhearted skinflint who refuses to release her inheritance.

Michael Cavensham, the Marquess of McCalpin, is not a heartless man. When he learns that Miss Lawson has been forging his name to procure funds, he can’t bring himself to have her arrested—not when the bold-faced embezzler is so enchantingly beautiful. Instead, McCalpin agrees to visit her home to assess the situation more closely. March has no choice but to accept. But how can she manage the handsome trustee who controls her purse strings—when he tugs at her heart strings as well?

The Luck of the Bride is the third installment of Janna MacGregor's Cavensham Heiresses series. This stand-alone historical romance is everything I want in a historical romance from it's caring heroine to the plot that tugs on the heartstrings!

March Lawson has been struggling to care for her three younger siblings since the death of their parents. Though their father put provisions in place so that they, and their estate, would be taken care of, March's requests for more money go unanswered. She's left with no choice but to steal from her own inheritance! Her actions come to light by the Marquess of McCalpin, but instead of whisking her off to jail, he steps in as guardian for her family. Settled in the home of the McCalpin's parents, the Lawsons finally experience the life they were meant to have: balls, courtship, and for young Bennett, learning how to be head of the family.

The Marquess might become the Lawson's savior, but he is far from perfect. This is one reason why I loved their romance so much. Both Michael and March have insecurities, but I liked that Michael wasn't cast as some perfect hero who swoops in and saves the heroine and makes no mistakes along the way. He's flawed and believes his flaws make him a failure, but with an ability that he lacks March could help him manage his duchy. March's embezzling causes many obstacles throughout the story resulting in heartbreak and tears for days. I literally could not get through this story without crying. It was made to make even the most well-read romantic feel the tender emotions coursing through the plot.

Janna MacGregor exposes her characters' vulnerabilities and makes you fall in love with them as they fall in love with each other. The Luck of the Bride is the kind of story that reminds me why I'm constantly reading. I'm on the search for the stories I can always come back to when I'm in a reading rut and need something refreshing and familiar. This one definitely goes on the list! I highly recommend for historical romance fans of Maya Banks, Suzanne Enoch, and Valerie Bowman!

FIRST LOOK: Don't Call Me Cupcake by Tara Sheets

There’s a very special kind of sweetness to life on Pine Cove Island . . .

Most families have a favorite recipe or two, handed down through generations. The Holloway women are a little different. Emma Holloway, like her grandmother before her, bakes wishes into her delicious cupcakes, granting the recipient comfort, sweet dreams, or any number of good things. It’s a strange gift, but it brings only happiness. Until gorgeous, smooth-talking newcomer Hunter Kane strolls into her shop, Fairy Cakes—and Emma makes the mistake of selling him not one, but three Sweet Success cupcakes.

Hunter, it turns out, is opening a fancy new restaurant and bakery right on the waterfront—Emma’s competition. To make matters worse, the town committee has decided to split the upcoming summer festival contract between the two, forcing Emma to work with her nemesis. But she can’t afford to split her profits. The solution: create a recipe that will make Hunter leave town permanently.

The Holloway charms are powerful. But there are other kinds of magic in the world—like red-hot first kisses, secret glances, and the feeling that comes with falling truly, madly, inconveniently in love . . .

“You.” A woman’s voice called behind him, and he turned to see the cupcake girl marching toward him. She was still wearing that black-and-white frilly apron. With her blond ringlets flying around her delicate face and flinty sparks in her gray eyes, Hunter felt like he was about to be attacked by a sexy Goldilocks.
He searched behind him as she approached, to make sure she wasn’t talking to someone else. “Me?”
She stopped in front of him, a little out of breath from her march down the street. Her chest lifted and fell intriguingly over the white apron lace, but her rosebud mouth was pursed tightly and Hunter took a step back. He had seen that look on women before. Goldilocks was not happy.
“Yes, you,” she said through gritted teeth. “You lied to me. You’re not a tourist.”
“Uh,” Hunter glanced around for a moment. “I’m not?”
“No, you’re not.” She stepped in close, grabbing the pastry box out of his hand. She peered inside and glared up at him in accusation. “And of course. You had to go and eat all three of them, didn’t you?”
He blinked. “But, I paid for them, remember?”
“That’s not the point. You. Ate. Them.”
“Yes,” he said carefully. Maybe Goldilocks liked to spike her morning porridge. “They were delicious?”
Ugh.” She stomped her foot and he tried not to smile. She was irritated, yes, but so damn adorable. Even if she was a little bit odd.
“You shouldn’t have eaten them because you weren’t being honest with me. You’re not just a tourist passing through. You’re the new owner of that.” She pointed to the empty waterfront building that would soon be his fancy new café and restaurant.
“Yes.” He held out his hand and gave her his best smile. “I’m Hunter Kane.”
She frowned back at him, ignoring his hand. “I know who you are. And you should have told me that before I gave you those Sweet Success cupcakes.”
“Why?”
“Because I own Fairy Cakes, and now your business is going to take away all my customers.” She looked so upset that Hunter felt a twinge of pity for her, even though she was being ridiculous. Competition was the name of the game in any industry, and restaurant ownership was no exception. “Look, I’m sorry you feel that way, but it’s just business. And why would my eating your chocolate cupcakes be a problem anyway? It’s not like I’m going to steal the recipe or something.”
“Ha,” she scoffed. “As if you ever could. My cupcakes are special, and everyone on this island knows it.”
“Oh . . . kay.” He still wasn’t quite sure what she was getting at.
“And now you’ve gone and eaten them.” She threw her hands up in the air.
Hunter frowned down at her. “Well, excuse me, ma’am. I thought that was the whole point of buying them.”
She jammed her hands onto her hips. “First of all, I’m twenty-five years old. Don’t call me ‘ma’am.’ Save it for old ladies with lapdogs.”

“Fine, Cupcake.” He shouldn’t have said it. He knew it. But something about her righteous indignation made him want to tease her. She gasped, her eyes narrowing on him like an angry feline. He was so dead.

Romantic Suspense Blog Tour: "What Would Your Heroine Do?"

What Would These Romantic Suspense Heroines Do?
With Lisa Renee Jones, Melinda Leigh, and Elisabeth Naughton

This month bestselling authors Lisa Renee Jones, Elisabeth Naughton, and Melinda Leigh are each releasing thrilling romantic suspense novels. But while they write in the same genre, you can expect very different stories.

Lisa kicks off her new Lilah Love series with a bang in Murder Notes. When copycat murders plague her hometown, FBI profiler Lilah Love is sent to investigate. But she returns to find hidden secrets from her past aren’t staying hidden and the danger swirling around her is just beginning.

Elisabeth continues her RITA award Deadly Secrets series with Protected. Fashion designer Kelsey McClane rolls her eyes when her overprotective brothers saddle her with a bodyguard while she is on a press tour, however, she’s more than thankful to have former Army Ranger Hunter O’Donnell on her side when a deadly explosion hits too close to home.

Morgan Dane is back in Melinda Leigh’s unforgettable new story Bone’s Don’t Lie. In this outing Morgan stands by her man as Lance attempts to unearth the secrets of his father’s decades old murder. Morgan quickly realizes that just because the case is cold, doesn’t mean the original killer isn’t out for more blood.

Interested in learning more about these books? Continue reading as Lisa, Elisabeth, and Melinda play a not-always-nice game of “What Would Your Heroine Do?” that will give you an inside look at their characters and enter the giveaway to win copies of the authors’ full series.

**
****************************

What would your heroine do if she feels like someone is following her, yet she can’t prove it?

Lisa: Well funnily enough in the first book of my Lilah Love series, Murder Notes, Lilah is being followed, but she can prove it as her stalker is quite blatant and goading with their practices. However, if Lilah couldn’t prove it, she would probably cuss a blue streak, as she’s prone to do, and make herself bait in order to lure her stalker out. She’s definitely not afraid of any danger, she is an FBI agent after all, and she loves nothing more than to best someone at their own game.

Elisabeth: This actually happens in Protected! I don’t want to give too much away, but Kelsey would definitely turn to someone she trusts for help. In this case...Hunter O’Donnell...the hero of Protected.

Melinda: The first thing Morgan would do is determine if she was actually being followed. She'd make some turns then see if the car was still behind her. If it was, she would never drive home and lead a potential stalker to her family. Instead, she’d head somewhere public and call PI Lance Kruger. Together, they’d try to trap whoever was following her.

What would your heroine do if the man in her life was injured and in the hospital?

Elisabeth: Freak out. LOL Actually I think her reaction is dependent on how and when he was injured and whether she thinks she’s somehow responsible.

Lisa: Lilah’s man, Kane, is forbidden fruit. He brings out her dark side. He’s on the wrong side of the law. He helped her do something very bad and she wants to blame him, but really blames herself. She can’t really be with him but she loves him. If he were hurt, she’d try to play it cool. She would put on a strong face at first, but she would go to Kane and the minute he catches her showing that she cares, he’d point it out. He’d make her admit it. She’d, in turn, deny her feelings and tell him in no uncertain terms that he’s screwed with her schedule and he better not f-ing do it again. She’d tell him she hates him for making her worry but that means she loves him, and he knows it, too. She’d try to go after his enemy, and Kane, would go after her.

Melinda: Since, Lance frequently gets himself into trouble, Morgan has some experience with this. She is protective and loyal and always wants to be by his side.

What would your heroine do if she receives an anonymous text accusing her of committing a heinous crime?

Elisabeth: Kelsey would be shocked first. Then become angry and want to track down the sender of the text.

Melinda: Having been stalked in the past, Morgan takes threats seriously. She would want to find out who sent her this text. She would try to trace the phone number, enlisting the help of experienced investigator Lincoln Sharp or computer whiz Jenny Kruger if necessary. In the meantime, she’d be extra vigilant — and so would Lance.

Lisa: In the opening Duet that launches the Lilah Love Series, Lilah isn’t getting text messages, but rather notes, left for her. They are very “I Know What You Did Last Summer” since she really did something bad. She isn’t one to be played with though, so Lilah goes on the attack, seeking out her note writer.

What would your heroine do if she wins a surprise trip to a faraway tropical island?

Melinda: Single mom Morgan has not had a vacation in ages. She'd talk her sister into babysitting her three kids and pack her bags! Or… could she save the trip as a potential future honeymoon?

Lisa: I don’t think I can picture Lilah on a vacation, she’s such a workaholic! But as far as her response to winning it, she’d probably say she has far too many dead bodies to deal with and then handoff the winnings to someone else.

Elisabeth: Kelsey is skeptical of everything so I’m pretty sure she’d assume the surprise trip was a scam.

What would your heroine do if she has the choice to confront someone threatening her?

Elisabeth: The answer to this really depends on whether this confrontation happens at the before Protected or after. Kelsey’s journey through the book is really one of empowerment. At the start of Protected I don’t see her being confrontational with someone threatening her, but by the end she really comes into her own. She’s never going to be a kick-ass heroine like some of my other heroines, but she can definitely take care of herself.

Melinda: Morgan comes from a law enforcement family. Her father and grandfather, both former cops, taught her to defend herself when she was young. She would rather not get into a physical altercation unless it was absolutely unavoidable. She prefers to talk her way out of trouble. That said, she carries a gun and knows how to use it.

Lisa: Lilah does this on a daily, if not hourly basis. She sometimes even provokes the threat, so her response would be colorful, as are all of her responses, with a hint of condescending humor and her own threat in return.

Inked is Anne Marsh's next red-hot read in the Hard Riders MC series. If you though Rev was a crazy bad boy, wait until you meet his friend!

Tattoo artist Vik finds the perfect pretend girlfriend to get his father off his back for a while. Harper is an investment banker and has just been kicked out of her home and relationship. So while she and Vik become each other's booty call in reality, Vik's father is under the impression that he's finally found the one.

I have to say that I loved this story much more than Ruled. Vik is not completely what I thought he was going to be just from the peek of him from the previous story. The image I get after reading Inked is of a big teddy bear because, come on! His character is so endearing even when he's being seductive. He doesn't come across as a womanizing jerk, just a guy who really, really enjoys the company of women and loves to pretend he's all party and play. He and Harper were the perfect match up even though, yet again, they are total opposites. Harper might seem uptight on the surface but she can go toe-to-toe with Vik. Vik is adamant that real feelings don't belong in their relationship, but as they get to know each other the pull of attraction is undeniable.

If you love friends with benefits to full blown relationship stories then this is the read for you! Anne Marsh doesn't make it easy for Vik and Harper to find their happy ending but when they get there it's the sweetest ending ever!

M is for Muder Notes (Review)

New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones’s heart-pounding thriller of a woman’s secrets—and a past that’s about to come out of hiding…

As an FBI profiler, it’s Lilah Love’s job to think like a killer. And she is very good at her job. When a series of murders surface—the victims all stripped naked and shot in the head—Lilah’s instincts tell her it’s the work of an assassin, not a serial killer. But when the case takes her back to her hometown in the Hamptons and a mysterious but unmistakable connection to her own life, all her assumptions are shaken to the core.

Thrust into a troubled past she’s tried to shut the door on, Lilah’s back in the town where her father is mayor, her brother is police chief, and she has an intimate history with the local crime lord’s son, Kane Mendez. The two share a devastating secret, and only Kane understands Lilah’s own darkest impulses. As more corpses surface, so does a series of anonymous notes to Lilah, threatening to expose her. Is the killer someone in her own circle? And is she the next target?

Montlake Romance
Rating: 5/5

Murder Notes introduces unconventional FBI profiler Lilah Love as she returns to her hometown to catch a killer. The start of Lisa Renee Jones's new series is dark with a touch levity in the form of Lilah's sassy attitude. Lilah's unfiltered voice keeps the story interesting and moving into the unknown.

Lilah is a young and super successful profiler. In most of the profiler stories I've read the profilers are made from a chip on the shoulder, something in their past inspired them, or instincts that serve well in the field. In this case, Lilah has more than a chip on her shoulder and the trauma she's dealing with is an extraordinary conversation starter. She's tasked with linking cases in California to an breaking case in the Hamptons, the place where she left behind family and an ex that presses all her buttons. Everyone else thinks their culprit is a serial killer. Only Lilah believes they're looking for an assassin. Only she knows that the cases are definitely linked, and the common factor is herself.

Murder Notes is an exciting read created by a tangled web of secrets and lies. By the end it isn't even close to being unraveled! I love the way the story continuously builds whether from Lilah finding clues about what's going on, or from her family and so-called friends revealing that they're not as predictable as Lilah assumed. Lilah is a demanding, fierce character who may not be likable to every reader, but her frankness is certainly refreshing. The trauma she hasn't dealt with dogs her every step, especially now that someone might know her secrets.

This fast-paced novel will keep you up reading late into the night, and it's worth every minute of lost sleep! That feeling you get when you're eager to solve a mystery follows you right up until the end and then, it's over. Lisa Renee Jones ends Murder Notes with a nice, tidy hook to keep you coming back for more! I'm extremely excited for Murder Girl, the next Lilah Love story!

Dark and Edgy Suspense: Such Dark Things (Review)

A modern day Fatal Attraction meets The Girl on the Train, by New York Times and USA Today bestselling new adult author Courtney Cole, now writing dark psychological suspense under the name Courtney Tate Evans.

From the outside, Dr. Corinne Cabot is living the American dream: a successful ER physician, she is married to a hardworking and handsome psychologist. Together they own a charming house in the Chicago suburbs. But Cabot has a dark personal past and her memory has holes she tries to fill in. Her sleep is ravaged by recurring nightmares of that night when, as a teenager, she found her father standing next to the bodies of two people he had shot dead. It is what she can't remember about that night that utterly haunts her. Her father is still alive in jail for that terrible crime. At times now, despite her success, she fears she is truly unable to determine what is real and what is not. Then she starts to suspect that something is amiss with her husband and realizes that nothing--and no one--in her life is as it appears.
Such Dark Things
Courtney Evan Tate
Pub Date: 3/20/18
Mira Books
Genre: Suspense
Rating: 5/5
Amazon | B&N | Kobo

I was introduced to Courtney Evan Tate's brand of dark and edgy when I read Princess, one of her older works as Courtney Cole. I loved it then, and I love it now! I wasn't surprised at the depth and layers she's created to take readers on a dark ride through the lives of a successful couple.

I will forever measure any story that claims to be dark and edgy against Such Dark Things, because this one goes where others won't and still manages to be meaningful and thought-provoking. The story misdirects while leading you to the heart of the novel. The terror and guilt Corrine carries deep, deep in her subconscious haunt her until her nightmares bleed into reality. Nearing the anniversary of a tragedy, that ended with her father in prison, Corinne retreats into herself, straining her marriage while questioning her sanity, and Jude himself has a test of loyalty that could potentially harm their relationship further.

This whirlwind psychological suspense is totally consuming! As the Jude and Corinne's lives spiral out of control the story sucks you further in. Flitting back and forth, from past to present, in both Jude and Corinne's perspective was the perfect way to tell this story. I'm quite surprised with how the secrets and motives of the characters were carefully hidden until the right moment. Some elements of the plot just snuck up on me! It's easy to feed off the emotions of the characters and react to the decisions they make, proving this is a completely engaging read.

Such Dark Things is truly an unputdownable read and I gleefully recommend it for fans of The Lucky Ones by Tiffany Riesz!
