A Captivating Historical: JILLIAND (Review)

“Bruised, bloody, and barely dressed, she knew it was over. She had no doubt the Vikings would search for her if she tried to run—especially now, with their companion lying dead. It would be dark soon, and she had no idea where she could go or hide. Jilliand knew they would come for her. The Vikings were not likely to let this go—especially it being an attack by a woman. She was defeated. Weak and shaking, she stared at the man’s body. I think tonight I die.”

In Jilliand, Clare Gutierrez creates the perfect blend of war, romance, politics, and 9th century Viking and English culture. I really enjoyed reading Jilliand because it's so captivating from the setting to the characters. Jilliand's journey is filled with many hardships starting with an escape from her abusive father into a world so completely unknown to her.

This story is so easy to sink into as Jilliand learns to survive and grow into a brave woman. When her path crosses with Viking sea king Rurik, Jilliand faces an even greater challenge. She has to find a place among the fierce warriors who live harsh lives and worship different gods. Rurik and Jilliand are two completely different types of characters but they complement each other. I loved reading the story through each of their eyes and it made the story interesting and unpredictable. I never knew what would happen next in the story, but each new situation was a cause to read faster to see how Jilliand made out. The plot is full of ups and downs, which will appeal to the emotional side of readers. I like that nothing came easily for Jilliand, but she fought for the future anyway. She's one of those rare heroines that inspire hope and independence without a lot of second guessing or complaining.

Jilliand is definitely a story for historical fiction readers, especially if you love the romantic aspect of the story, of course, for which I read greedily! It will be hard to leave this story when you've finished reading, and it will stick with you long after!

Make Me Crave Excerpt

Tomorrow would be soon enough for them to go exploring and try out the stand-up paddleboards Allie had eyed when she’d checked out the beach.
Her face heated at the fact she’d been caught topless sunbathing. Whoever that guy was, he’d been far off enough that she couldn’t clearly see his face. Those shoulders, though… Allie shivered. Even at a distance, she’d seen the cut of his muscles and how purposefully he’d maneuvered the kayak through the turquoise waters. The island must have already gone to her head, because she’d spent a truly insane moment hoping he’d come to shore so she could get a better look at him.
Maybe more than a better look.
Allie laughed at her fanciful thoughts. Vacation hookups were all well and good, but if that was what she’d wanted, she’d chosen the wrong place to go. Isolation and relaxation were the name of the game on West Island, which was exactly what she’d craved when she let Becka talk her into booking the trip. It was the exact opposite of New York and her life there.
But now she found herself wondering if maybe something slightly more chaotic would have been a better choice. The sun and sea had soaked into her blood and the heady feeling had her convinced anything was possible. It was only a week. The perfect length of time for a fling…
If she wasn’t on a private island in the middle of the ocean without a single man in sight.
She bypassed the little golf cart that was one of the main forms of transportation here. It felt good to walk after being cooped up on the plane and then lying prone while she sunned herself. She usually taught at least one class a day at Transcend—more if she needed to cover someone else’s schedule—so being inactive wasn’t natural for her. It was only a mile or two to the restaurant and the day had started to cool as the sun reached for the horizon. It’d be downright pleasant tonight.
She’d make sure to wake early and attend one of the yoga classes offered, and the rest of the day would be filled with activities that would keep restlessness from setting in. There was even scuba diving available, though Allie wasn’t sure she was feeling that adventurous. Snorkeling? Sure. Going deeper with only a tank and a few tubes between her and drowning? That would take a whole lot more convincing.
The path was cleared and well maintained to allow the carts to drive without problems, so she let her mind wander as she fell into a natural stride that ate up the distance without tiring her out. Every once in a while, the path would branch off in different directions, some heading toward other villas, some heading deeper inland. There was a small selection of hiking trails that offered tours of the history of the island.
She made it to the restaurant easily, and found it practically deserted. Allie paused in the doorway, wondering if she’d misunderstood the woman who’d checked them in. Maybe it was closed?
“Looks like it’s just you and me.”
She jumped and spun around. The man stood a respectable distance away, but his sheer size ate up the space and made her feel closed in. She froze. I’d recognize those shoulders anywhere. Confirming her suspicion, his gaze slid over her body as if he was reminding himself of what she looked like with nothing but what she’d worn on the beach. She tried to swallow past her suddenly dry throat. “You.”
“Me.” He finally looked her in the face, and she rocked back on her heels. The man was an Adonis. There was no other way to describe his blond perfection, from his hazel eyes to the square jaw to the cleft in his chin to the body that just wouldn’t quit. He might be wearing a shirt now, but the button-down did nothing to hide his muscle definition.
He held out a wide hand with equally perfect square fingers. “Let me buy you a drink?”
“We’re at an all-inclusive resort.”
His lips twitched, eyes twinkling. “Have a drink with me.”
Oh, he was good. Charm practically colored the air between them, and she had the inexplicable impulse to close the distance and stroke a finger along his jawline. To flick that cleft chin with her tongue.
Allie gave herself a shake. “Since we’re the only ones here, it’d be silly to sit apart.”
The look he gave her said he saw right through the excuse, and why not when it was pathetically flimsy? The truth was that this man was magnetic and she suspected she’d be drawn to him even in a room full of people. He waved a hand at the empty place. “Lady’s choice.”
“How magnanimous of you.”
“I try.”
She laughed and headed for the table in the middle of the small patio. There were half a dozen tables, and she picked a spot that put her back to the building and presented the best view of the ocean through a carefully curated gap in the foliage.
He eyed the view and then the chair on the other side of the table, and then he picked it up and set it adjacent to hers so they were sitting on a diagonal,  rather than directly across from each other. “Nice view.”
She turned to agree—and found him staring at her.
Allie wasn’t falsely modest. Life was too short to play games with body shaming and pretending she didn’t have access to a mirror. She was pretty—beautiful when she put some effort into it—but she’d given up being skinny or petite after the agony of high school, and she wasn’t athletically built like some of the women at her gym. Sure, she had muscle beneath her softness, and she could keep up with the best of them in her spin classes, but she loved food just as much as she loved to sweat, and her curves reflected that. Some guys had a problem with that, though she didn’t keep them around as soon as comments like “Should you really be eating that?” started.
This guy looked at her like he wanted to put her on the table and feast on her for dinner.
The desire stoked the flame inside her that had kindled the second she saw him. She leaned forward, checking his left hand. No ring. No tan lines, either. “What brings you to West Island?”
“It’s paradise, isn’t it? Who wouldn’t want to come here to get away from it all?”
That wasn’t quite an answer, but she was distracted by the intoxicating way his mouth moved when he spoke. Get ahold of yourself, Allie. You’re in danger of panting for him. She took a quick drink of water that did nothing to quell the heat rising with each minute she sat next to him.
Luckily, a waiter appeared to save her from saying something truly embarrassing. He outlined the menu for the night and took their drink orders, then disappeared as quickly as he’d come.
They were in the middle of one of the most beautiful places Allie had ever seen, and she couldn’t manage to tear her gaze away from this stranger. She licked her lips, every muscle in her body tensing when he followed the movement. She opened her mouth, but before she could speak, he took her hand, running his thumb over her knuckles.
The touch was innocent enough, but she felt that light movement in places that were most definitely not innocent. She didn’t have to look down to know her nipples now pressed against the thin fabric of her sundress.
His smile was slow and sinful and promised things she never would have had the gall to ask for. “This is going to sound unforgivably forward, but what do you say we get out of here and go back to my villa?”
It was crazy. More than crazy. She didn’t even know his name, and she sure as hell didn’t know anything more pertinent about him.
But there on the softly lit patio with the tropical scent of some flower she didn’t recognize and the soft shushing sound of the tide coming in, she didn’t feel like Allie, gym owner and mother hen, the responsible one who could never afford to do anything out of line or make a misstep because too many lives depended on her.
Here, she was just Allie, a woman. A woman who desperately wanted the man staring at her mouth as if he was doing everything in his power to keep from kissing her right then and there. She licked her lips again, secretly delighting in the way a muscle in his jaw jumped. “Yes.”
“Yes, let’s get out of here.”

When You Knew (Review)

An unlikely couple must decide what truly defines family.
Gentry Cabot’s rebellious life comes to a screeching halt when a one-night stand leads to a sobering new reality: motherhood. Exhausted and overwhelmed, the former wild child struggles to raise an infant on her own. After a lifetime of feeling like the odd Cabot out, Gentry knows that what her son needs most is family. For his sake, she plans to rebuild bridges with them, but first she needs a little help on the home front.
Humanitarian worker Ian Crawford has devoted his life to service. Forced to temporarily return stateside, he’s eager to head back to Haiti to expand the nonprofit he just founded in his late father’s honor. He can’t do that without money, so when Gentry offers a hefty paycheck for a short-term gig as a live-in nanny, he can’t afford to say no. Ian expects to deal with a barrage of privileged problems. What he doesn’t expect is how quickly being a makeshift father transforms him.
Despite his growing attachment to Gentry and her child, Ian still has his dreams, and Gentry wants a full-time dad for her son. When the baby’s father reenters the picture, will Gentry and Ian embrace the family they’ve formed or end up worlds apart?

Fans of Catherine Bybee's Not Quite series will enjoy the next entry in Jamie Beck's Cabot family series! When You Knew focuses on Gentry Cabot who is tired of being her family's black sheep. When Ian Crawford becomes her son's manny she learns that it's better to live for herself and her son rather than fold herself into an image only her family will appreciate.

I loved this story because Gentry and Ian were total opposites but helped each other become the best version of themselves. Gentry helped Ian to open up and remember that he can help others, carry on his father's legacy, and still have fun and enjoy life. Ian bolstered Gentry's confidence in motherhood and opened her eyes to a life where she doesn't have to beg for her family's affection, but can strike the perfect balance of mutual respect. This contemporary romance is heartwarming with big personalities. The characters are realistic from their insecurities and their expressions of a range emotions. It always kills me when I read stories where the characters are super nice to each other even when situations call for some expressive actions, so it's excellent to see these characters tell each other off or really talk through their feelings. It makes them more realistic and relatable.

I believe contemporary romance fans will enjoy When You Knew because it focuses on family. Gentry's circumstances are not ideal but she makes it work because she's concerned about her son's future and doesn't want history to repeat itself. Readers can jump right into the Cabot series even if you haven't read the previous novels. I haven't and I still felt like I got a good picture of the family dynamics up to this point. I was still able to get emotionally invested in Gentry's story so this works as a stand alone. This is my first time reading Jamie Beck, but I'm more than ready for more of her work!

Cowboy On My Mind + Bonus Novella (Review)

A heartwarming western romance about a cowboy who gets a second chance with the first love he couldn't forget in the rugged beauty of the Montana mountains. . .

Don't miss this special 2-in-1 edition that includes a bonus western romance novella by Sara Richardson!

Once a bad boy...
Ben Monroe was the ultimate bad boy-and everyone in Haller Creek knew it. But now as a sheriff's deputy, Ben spends his time breaking up bar fights rather than starting them, and staying away from trouble...until Becca Henderson comes back into town. She's just as beautiful as Ben remembers-and just as far out of his reach.

Coming home is exactly what Becca Henderson needed. A place of her own, a successful new business, and a chance to reconnect with the sexy cowboy she had a crush on in school. Ben has always blazed his own path and never let anyone stand in his way. It excites-and scares-her. But when an unexpected threat surfaces, Becca will see just how far Ben will go to protect the woman he loves-and fight for their chance at forever.

Pub Date: 6/26/18
Genre: Western Romance
Rating: 5/5

I knew Cowboy on My Mind was a winner from the start of the prologue. R.C. Ryan deftly introduces the men of the Montana Strong series with a little background on how everyone came to find a place on Monroe ranch. Any story that begins with a selfless act deserves time and consideration and Cowboy on My Mind is so worth it!

This is one of those tender, sweet romances underscored by passion. Ben Monroe is moving beyond his childhood reputation of a "hell-raiser". When the girl he's always had a bit of a crush on moves back to town the sparks between them come to life. Becca Henderson moves back to town with dreams of remaining independent of her parents and starting a successful business, but a mysterious shooter could derail all her progress. Becca is one of those heroines that sees beyond outward appearances and town gossip. She trusts Ben with her protection even when her parents, her father especially, talk him down and never let him forget his past misbehavior.

I'm not crazy about love at first sight types of romances, but this story is so much more than that. It's an undeniably saccharine blend of long-time crush and small-town romance with a little suspense thrown in for good measure. Even though it's easy for Ben and Becca to fall into a relationship there are outside forces that try to keep them apart. Overall, the two are not blind to their attraction and have few hangups when giving in to that attraction. I love their interactions because they're so honest with each other and share so many tender moments that gave me thundering butterflies. There's just something about a reformed bad boy with the heart of a protector that I always enjoy reading about.

Life on the Monroe ranch is idyllic and a big part of the story. Ben and his two younger brothers found a home and lifelong mentors there. For Becca, Monroe Ranch becomes a safe haven and source of inspiration. It's one of those places that exist only in imagination, but you feel welcome every time you pick up a Montana Strong novel. I can't wait to come back for another visit because there's so much more to enjoy!

Rocky Mountain Cowboy is a novella featured in a special edition of Cowboy on My Mind by R.C. Ryan. Set in the world of Sara Richardson's Rocky Mountain Riders series, readers are welcomed back to Topaz Falls, Colorado. The story is as sweet as it is full of sexy cowboys and big-hearted heroines, and perfect for an introduction to this series!

Sara Richardson does an excellent job of quickly immersing readers, new and old, into the Rocky Mountain Riders world. Characters from previous books were smoothly introduced as Jaden and Kate's story took center stage. Rocky Mountain Cowboy has an adventurous air and by the time you finish reading it you're planning a trip to the Coloradan mountains! I felt like I was breathing the same crisp, fresh air as Jaden because that's how alive the setting is. Based on how easily I got emotionally attached to the characters gives me hope for diving head-first into the series. This heat-filled western romance has done nothing but get me excited for the upcoming True-Blue Cowboy! I highly recommend to fans of A.J. Pine and R.C. Ryan because there's something about tough cowboys with emotional depth that you cannot miss out on!

Wilders (Review)

Coryn Williams has grown up in the megacity of Seacouver, where her every need is provided for—except satisfaction with her life. After her parents' suicides, her sister Lou fled the city to work on a rewilding crew, restoring lands once driven to the brink of ecological disaster by humans to a more natural state. Finally of age, Coryn leaves the city with her companion robot to look for her sister.

But the outside world is not what she expects—it is rougher and more dangerous, and while some people help her, some resent the city and some covet her most precious resource: her companion robot. As Coryn struggles toward her sister, she uncovers a group of people with a sinister agenda that may endanger Seacouver.

When Coryn does find her sister, Lou has secrets she won't share. Can Coryn and Lou learn to trust each other in order to discover the truth hidden behind the surface and to save both Seacouver and the rewilded lands?

Project Earth #1

Pub Date: June 2017
Genre: Science Fiction
Rating: 4/5
Amazon | B&N | Kobo

Brenda Cooper is one of those authors whose books you immediately pick up, maybe before even reading the blurb. Wilders, first in the Project Earth series, is a prime example of her ability to create vast worlds with environmental, futuristic, and dystopian appeal. The dynamic between the characters and the world they live in is intriguing and pulls you in as the dangers they face are revealed.

With robot companion in tow, Coryn Williams leaves the protection of domed Seacouver to reunite with her older sister, Lou. Lou works on the Outside on a rewilding crew, but her messages home convince Coryn that Outside is her next logical choice after graduation. Her travels opens her eyes to the truth of Outside and the factions moving to attack the city. The issues unveiled in the story show the complexity of the world readers will step into. I thought it interesting that the people Coryn meets try to keep her in the dark about what they're planning or why they're trying to force change because Coryn proves to be in a unique position to help. Her experience and tenacity drew me in to see what role she would play in the end.

I enjoyed Coryn's character. She's sassy, smart, and not afraid to speak her mind or stand up for herself. She has the unique ability to connect with many different people and along the way befriends a variety of interesting characters. Coryn didn't really find her voice until closer to the end of the story, but her initial naivety helps readers get to know the true state of her world right along with her.

Coryn's journey allows readers to experience the natural and technological side of her world. With steady pacing and an underlying sense of impending change, Wilder's delivers a complex plot that you won't be able to pull away from until you've reached the end of the adventure! I can't wait to see what's on the horizon for Coryn and her friends in the next book, Keepers!

BLOG TOUR: The Cottages on Silver Beach (Review)

Years after betraying her, he’s back in Haven Point…and ready to learn the truth

Megan Hamilton never really liked Elliot Bailey. He turned his back on her family when they needed him the most and it almost tore them all apart. So she’s shocked when Elliot arrives at her family’s inn, needing a place to stay and asking questions that dredge up the past. Megan will rent him a cottage, but that’s where it ends—no matter how gorgeous Elliot has become.

Coming back home to Haven Point was the last thing bestselling writer Elliot Bailey thought he’d ever do. But the book he’s writing now is his most personal one yet and it’s drawn him back to the woman he can’t get out of his mind. Seeing Megan again is harder than he expected and it brings up feelings he’d thought were long buried. Could this be his chance to win over his first love?

RaeAnne Thayne continues to invite readers to cozy Haven Point where the people are real and their lives are constantly expanding in family and love. I jumped into the series at book five, Snowfall on Haven Point, and haven't looked back since!

Megan Hamilton, owner of the Inn at Haven Point, finally confronts the brother of her dead boyfriend, Elliot Bailey. FBI agent and successful author of crime thrillers, Elliot once stood against his best friend, and Megan's brother Luke, during an investigation when his wife disappeared mysteriously. The suspicion in the aftermath continues to plague Luke and it may spiral out of control if Elliot decides to dig into the case. Megan comes to realize that there's more to Elliot than the robotic law enforcement agent persona he dons around her when he convinces her that knowing the truth could set her family free.

Each time I open up a Haven Point novel I kind of know what to expect. So far in the series each character has a dream they're working towards and an emotional set back. Along the way they might clash heads with a romantic interest that eventually provides a shoulder to lean on or opens their eyes to a truth hidden just below the surface. The set up is always different, but the endgame is more or less the same. I'm waiting for the one storyline that takes me by complete surprise whether from the character type or overall theme of the novel. It came pretty close in The Cottages on Silver Beach with the fiery dynamic between Megan and Elliot. They weren't overly friendly with each other initially and when it was awkward between them I could feel it radiate from the pages. I liked seeing them discover things about each other that they were previously ignorant of because it showed the progression of their relationship. There was tension that stemmed from an active cold case involving Megan's sister-in-law. I'd definitely be interested in Luke's story, because I just can't pass up a mystery like that!

The Cottages on Silver Beach gives readers a little mystery heavily dosed with sizzling romance. Don't miss the next Haven Point novel, perfect for fans of Brenda Novak and Jen Gilroy!

#ForeverSummerReading Featuring R.C Ryan's Summer Reading List

R.C. Ryan and Her Summer Reading List

This past year I bought a lake house. I can't tell you how much fun I'm having watching the changing seasons on the lake. Whether it's hot and sunny or dark and stormy, I always have a supply of books to be read.

Here are a few titles coming up on my reading list:

  • I love uncovering the little-known things about famous people from history that helped shape them into the bold, or courageous, or brilliant people they became. For that reason, I can't wait to dive into David McCullough's Mornings On Horseback: The Story of Theodore Roosevelt.
  • Loving Frank by Nancy Horan came highly recommended. It's not really a biography, but rather a fictional account of the love affair between Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Borthwick Cheney, written from her perspective.
  • I always have a number of really good mysteries waiting to be read. Some of my favorite authors and their latest releases are Brad Meltzer and The Escape Artist and James Patterson and All-American Murder.
  • What would summer be without romance? I'm eager to read Kristin Hannah's Summer Island.
  • Ahh. Historicals. I want to be swept away to another time. One of my all-time favorite authors is Philippa Gregory. Her fictionalized accounts of the English monarchs are absolutely spell-binding. At the top of my list is The Lady of the Rivers, and The Boleyn Inheritance.
  • I've read almost all of the more than two hundred novels written by my best pal Nora Roberts. Her latest, Year One, is her most ambitious series yet. I was fortunate enough to read it before publication, and I couldn't put it down. Now for the next two in the series…
Happy reading!

BLOG TOUR: Breathless (Review + Giveaway)

In Breathless, bestselling authors Celeste Bradley and Susan Donovan will sweep you away—across continents and centuries, combining the best of all worlds in one unforgettable romantic saga.

She was “the Swan.” London’s premiere courtesan. Men want to be with her. Women loathe her success and yet admire her beauty, her riches, her independence. Taken in by a tortured, sensuous man known as The Artist, the Swan comes to know the woman she wants to be—her artist’s siren.

There’s just one hitch—the frustrating, irritating, bold and beautiful art hunter Fitch Wilder is also looking for the Siren. He’s been a thorn in Brenna’s professional side for years, but when their individual quests lead them to team up despite being enemies, a whole new sumptuous world of art and culture opens up for the two of them. Celeste Bradley and Susan Donovan collaborate to bring readers an enchanting tale. The mystery behind the Siren series, a collection of captivating paintings, is unraveled as art hunter Fitch Wilder and sociology professor Brenna Anderson search for the link between the woman in the paintings and a London courtesan known as the Swan. This story will definitely sweep you into a world where past and present collide in the most wonderful way.

I haven't had the opportunity to read many stories that blend historical and contemporary fiction together, so I was eager for Breathless. I admit it took me a few chapters to get hooked, but once Brenna and Fitch started working together to get the scoop on the Swan I couldn't put it down. I was just as captivated and curious of her story as they were. The switch between the past and present throughout the story balanced perfectly and makes it so easy to follow especially as Brenna and Fitch find clues and old letters that lead them closer to the Swan's true identity. There's no unexplainable phenomenon where characters are thrust through time and space, but readers will be transported around the world and centuries in the past nonetheless.

What I appreciate most about this story is that it's like reading two romances in one! The characters are not solely focused on digging into the past for the sake of academic success or financial gain, but they truly want to breathe life into someone's incredible story. Breathless is a well-rounded read that appeals to readers who, like myself, love both historical and contemporary romances and even to those who prefer one genre over the other. I highly recommend this aptly named story that will indeed leave you breathless!
