Crash and Burn Series off to a Fiery Start: From Here to You (Review)

As Darby Dixon sits in a tiny Texas church bathroom on her wedding day holding a positive pregnancy test, she realizes that of all the bad decisions she's made in her life, marrying her abusive fiancé would be the worst. She's never been able to stand up for herself, but she'll sure as hell stand up for her baby. With just the cash she has on hand, she runs to get a bus ticket to the farthest place she can afford. Between her sheer grit and pageant-queen smile, she lands a job as a front desk clerk at the Colorado Springs Hotel. It's not a glamorous life, but she and her baby are all that matters.

A former Marine, Scott "Trex" Trexler has worked in the most dangerous, corrupt, war-torn places on earth. Now he finally has a chance to return to the last place he'd felt at peace--Colorado Springs, Colorado, to take a new job with the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, a top-secret military installation buried deep within the granite.

The moment Trex walks into the inn, Darby knows he's dangerous. There's no way she wants to get involved with another man who seems to be keeping way too many secrets. As charming and devastatingly gorgeous as Trex is, he clearly isn't telling her everything. But as wildfires rage on the mountain and Darby's ex-fiancé shows he isn't so willing to let her go, both she and Trex are soon to find out that what you don't know absolutely can hurt you.

Crash and Burn #1
Jamie McGuire
Pub Date: 8/21/18
Genre: Romance
Rating: 5/5

Jamie McGuire sucks readers into a heart-racing romance that proves love is worth fighting for. Darby Dixon learns she's pregnant on her wedding day, and still she finds the strength to walk away. At this point, I already loved this character because stepping into an unknown future for the sake of your safety and that of your unborn child takes much strength.

Darby lands a job in the same hotel where Trex is staying. Also new to town, Trex and Darby strike up a friendship that could be put in jeopardy is Darby ever learns the truth Trex is hiding from her. On the surface they are not perfect for each other, but as they open up about themselves the more impossible it is to not see that they belong together.

I love that over the course of the novel there is a wildfire raging out of control. There are many close calls for the brave firefighters that revolve in and out of the hotels so that adds a layer of anticipation throughout the story. There's a thread of suspense that follows Darby as she settles into her new life, because she may think she's escaped her abusive ex, but the threat of him popping up is always there. This novel will definitely put you through an emotional roller-coaster.

I never had a chance to read any stories featuring the Maddox brothers, except for Beautiful Disaster, and I see I've clearly missed a lot! This spinoff series is off to a fiery start and perfect for longtime Maddox Brothers fans, or those new to the fold. Jamie McGuire's stories are relatable, or downright entertaining, for any kind of reader!
